Winner of the Michael L. Printz Award * ALA Best Book for Young Adults * Kirkus Best Book Jellicoe Road is a dazzling tale that is part love story, part family drama, and part coming-of-age novel. Described by Kirkus Reviews as “a beautifully rendered mystery” and by VOYA as “a great choice for more sophisticated readers and those teens who like multifaceted stories and characters.” Abandoned by her mother on Jellicoe Road when she was eleven, Taylor Markham, now seventeen, is finally being confronted with her past. But as the reluctant leader of her boarding school dorm, there isn't a lot of time for introspection. And while Hannah, the closest adult Taylor has to family, has disappeared, Jonah Griggs, the boy who might be the key to unlocking the secrets for Taylor’s past, is back in town, moody stares and all. In this absorbing story by Melina Marchetta, nothing is as it seems and every clue leads to more questions as Taylor tries to work out the connection between her mother dumping her; Hannah finding her; Hannah’s sudden departure; a mysterious stranger who once whispered something in her ear; a boy in her dreams; five kids who lived on Jellicoe Road eighteen years ago; and the maddening and magnetic Jonah Griggs, who knows her better than she thinks he does. Melina MarchettaIf Taylor can put together the pieces of her past, she just might be able to change her future. So maybe it's because this is so much a story about memory (and also because it's so poetic/atmospheric), but there's something about it that made me really want a soundtrack to it. I did find a few songs that the author mentioned in. The most significant one is the one that Webb sings in Taylor's dreams, which is Flame Trees by Cold Chisel: Also, the song that Ben and the band play at the party at the clubhouse is by The Waterboys, and the New Order song they listen to in the car is. Young Adult FictionAnd of course there's and by Kenny Rogers. Those are songs that are explicitly mentioned in the book. I'm not super good at actually coming up with fanmixes, but I wonder if anybody who is good at it might be able to take a crack at incorporating some of those songs with some other songs that capture some of the moods/themes of the book to get a proper fanmix going. Or if a few people have one or two songs each to add, we can slowly build it together. Anyway, I think a Jellicoe Road fanmix would be really cool, and I would totally listen to it all the time, so I just wanted to put the idea out there.:).
